Toyota Way Values
Team Member Contest
Briefly
I was asked to build a tool to facilitate a contest for team members that would promote understanding of the Toyota Way Values.
Background
The Toyota Way Values are the foundation of the culture within Toyota. The goal of the contest was to have team members share with each other the ways in which their daily work, or specific experience, exemplifies one or more of the values. Teams were established for the contest based on functions led by a small group of Vice Presidents. Team members were encouraged to submit as many examples of values as they could, with the team submitting the most values winning the contest.
Process
I built a list and form for contest submissions and published on a contest page on the R&D Hub site, writing the content for the page and the contest instructions. The contest ran for 13 weeks, with a promotion each week in the newsletter, as well as on digital displays throughout the facilities. Participation was low, so I developed a graphic with the goal of catching people’s attention and inspiring some healthy competitiveness. I noticed an uptick in participation following these changes. I was also able to demonstrate that despite a general lack of enthusiasm for email, that particular communication channel prompted the most submissions to the contest.
Tools
I used SharePoint for the contest tools, PhotoShop for the graphics, and Excel to evaluate the participation data.
